CURLYFEATURE – MEET Leslie

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Leslie

My number one rule for maintaining my natural hair is to ensure my hair remains moisturized. The dryer your hair is the brittle it becomes and you risk breakage and damage to your beautiful, curly, and natural hair. I have used Cantu and Shea Moisture products my entire natural journey. I have just recently dove into using ManeChoice and As I am. And to my surprise, none have stripped my hair of its moisture. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Avamaria

Hey friends! I began my natural hair journey in 2013! I decided to go natural when I was looking back at old pictures of my hair when I was in middle school and couldn't believe how long and curly my hair used to be. I wanted my hair back! In high school, I was obsessed with straightening my hair which caused a lot of heat damage and dryness to my curls and a lot of money wasted on all the Brazilian treatments I did. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Laura

Hey curlies! My name is Laura, I'm a 27 year old stylist from Portland, OR. The start of my natural hair journey began back in 2011 when I became frustrated with the health of my hair. I had never seen my natural hair texture (I had been getting relaxers since I was 5!) and decided to transition for 10 months and finally big chop in 2012. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Kyler

Hey🏽, I'm Kyler Psami (Sammy), I'm from Jamaica and I've been natural for 7years but my hair is 2 years post my fourth big chop. Being natural for so long has been a real trial and error because I thought that every rule in the natural community was a one size fits all. But the truth is healthy hair comes with a simple regimen and knowing what your hair likes. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET DeANNA

Going natural was one of the greatest decisions of my life! All I could ever remember about my hair as a child was having a relaxer. I decided to give my natural tresses a shot one day when I took out a sew in and handn't had a relaxer in 6 months, and the beautiful natural hair I had growing revealed itself. That was 3 years ago in January, 2014. I transitioned about a year, then I big chopped, and I've been natural ever since. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Simone

Hi everyone! My name is Simone and I'm a 28 year old Speech Pathologist from Texas. I've been back and forth between relaxed and natural for about 5 years. I normally (well always) wear weaves! I just never really maintained my natural hair underneath my sew-ins. After a bad experience with a sew-in last April, I decided to take it out and when I did, I found my hair was a tangled mess! My relaxed hair was so tangled in with my natural hair, I literally cried. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Britt

Hi curlies!  I’m Britt and I’ve been “natural” my whole life.  Every time I got my hair done as a little girl, I was met with threats by my grandmother to NEVER put a relaxer in my hair.  In elementary school, I was the girl bouncing down the hallway making all types of noise with beads at the end of my braids.  Somehow, that made me forget that I was hollering about the hair dryer the night before!  I got my hair pressed for the first time in the sixth grade and that became my regular hair style.  Pressed, curled and flowy hair was my idea of beauty because that’s how most of my favorite celebrities styled their hair.    (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Iman

Hi curly girls I'm Iman. For starters I'm 22. I am currently a college student majoring in Computer Information Systems. Honestly I don't really have a great or fantastic reason for joining the natural community. I just decided one day that I wanted to start the natural process and that's what I did. I have been fully natural for about 2 years now. Initially I started transitioning in Nov. 2014 , but that was definitely a no go for me. So in June of 2015 I spontaneously decided to do the big chop. Doing so was not a hard decision for me because I've had my hair cut super short once before. So I guess I just had the mentality of the song "Let it Go" from the movie Frozen. I can say that on my natural journey I have realized managing my hair has been a much easier process than I thought. My # 1 rule for maintaining my natural crown...
