CURLYFEATURE – MEET Meika

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Meika

Hi my name is Meika. I started transitioning back to natural in Oct 2010. I made the choice simply because I was over my hair growing to a certain length, and eventually breaking off. I didn’t know what I was doing wrong. I transitioned for two full years slowly cutting out the relaxed hair. I at that point was still straightening my hair every two weeks but it was growing long and healthy. In the midst of transitioning my stylist, and I noticed my hair was actually pretty curly and coily! I had no idea because my lovely mother relaxed my hair at 10; so I never really knew my natural texture. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Brittany

Hiiiii Beauties & CURLfriends! My name is Brittany, and some may know me as “BeautywithBJ” on Youtube and Instagram. Let me first start by confessing: while many may have decided to go natural, I was sort of forced to. Forced as in, I didn’t have much of a choice once I experienced a cute protective style gone WRONG and the results were irreversible. [In short: I had Senegalese twists installed. When the stylist installed them she used beeswax AND Spritz in my hair, unbeknownst to me. It was not until I kept them in for about 1.5 months and tried to take them out that I realized my hair had begun to lock and knot in the majority of places around my head].  My only option was to cut it off and start over. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Bri

Hi I'm Bri, I first started going natural in 2011.I was over spending money on perms and visits to the hair salon. I cut my permed hair into a short style and transitioned out of the short style by using protective styling. As my hair got longer I began using heating tools which damaged my hair. I did my second big chop(my current style) myself at the end of 2015 to get rid of the damage. I love my short natural cut but I plan to start growing it out this year. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Jasmine

Hey Curly Ladies! My name is Jasmine, and this is my second time going natural. The first time I transitioned for two years. I started in 2012 as what I would call a "straight natural," meaning it wasn't relaxed, but I kept it straightened. I experienced lots of heat damage, and I was unhappy with my ends being straight. After two years, I gave up. I relaxed my hair and wore a short cut. I guess I got sucked in from all the cute short styles I would see on Pinterest. This style was short lived, and after 5 months I decided to do the "Big Chop." This was August 2014, not to mention I was 8 months pregnant.  Honestly, what motivated me was wanting to see and experience my true curl pattern. In my opinion, returning natural by doing the "Big Chop," was the BEST decision I've ever made for my hair. It was a chance to start over. This...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Mai

Hey, guys! I'm Mai! I turn 23 January 31st. I'm from Connecticut. I big chopped September 2014. I've been natural for 3 years! My natural hair journey has been filled with setbacks, trial & error, good/bad hair days. My number 1 rule in maintaining my curls is: love your curls and they'll love you back. That means - moisturizing when needed, styling when necessary, trims. Giving your hair the love that it needs. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Juliette

Hey Curly Sisters! My name is Juliette and I would love to tell you all about my journey. Since I was about 6 years old, My hair was relaxed. That's 21 years of not knowing my natural texture!!! I always wanted to be natural, but was too scared to actually take the plunge. I let everyone's interpretation of what "beauty" was influence me and I was tired of it. So summer of 2015 I did the big chop and it was the best decision I have ever made. I've never felt so free and so beautiful. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Dez

Hey ! My name is Dez and the number one rule for me when maintaining my curls has always been using little to no heat on my hair mainly meaning straightening that has always been a huge thing for me that I definitely wanted to stop that habit once I did that I could see the transformation with my curls. What fueled my passion to become natural was hanging out with my friend one night she was natural and I love her hair that's where my idea came. Also my boyfriend wanted me to try it As well so I decided hey why not let's see how long this lasts. Its has been 4 years since my transition no big chop just patience and trimming off any straight ends along the way one thing that I will end with is try not to compare your hair journey with any one else. @Miss.glenn_...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET CYNTHIA

My number 1 rule in maintaining my curls is CONSISTENCY. I have a very strict routine that I have been sticking to for years and it helped my hair to be what it is today. What fueled my passion to go natural was the health of my hair. When I was a kid I always had long thick hair but going to school in a time where natural hair wasn't accepted was tough and so I begged my mom to give me a relaxer. She always said no but she finally gave in when I was 15 years old. Initially my hair was so nice and long and I thought it was healthy. But eventually my hair started to break and get damaged. After realizing that my hair was extremely unhealthy I decided to just go natural. One summer I just told my sister to chop it off. I was met with lots of criticism from my friends and family who were...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Alana

My name is Alana but I prefer to be called Poe. Poe is short for Poetree and from my name, I am a poet. I represent and support anything natural for it is true health for the mind, body, and soul. I accept myself exactly how I am, and so, I am able to be completely natural in the way I always wished to be. FRO is much more than hair but the ultimate acceptance of YOUR definition of beauty in all shapes and forms. In my youth, I never permed or relaxed my hair, however, I was not shy to dyes and heat. My mother, a Native American, Panamanian and African American mix, had beautiful 4C hair where as my 3C hair couldn't compare; my biological Puerto Rican father had the blame in that. Nevertheless, I didn't have the confidence or knowledge to care for my waist length hair while in middle and high school. I cut my knots out of my hair, I...
