Hi my name is Meika. I started transitioning back to natural in Oct 2010. I made the choice simply because I was over my hair growing to a certain length, and eventually breaking off. I didn’t know what I was doing wrong. I transitioned for two full years slowly cutting out the relaxed hair. I at that point was still straightening my hair every two weeks but it was growing long and healthy. In the midst of transitioning my stylist, and I noticed my hair was actually pretty curly and coily! I had no idea because my lovely mother relaxed my hair at 10; so I never really knew my natural texture.

Once I decided that I wanted to embrace my curls of course I had heat damage SMH.  So fast forward to Oct 14’ I decided to embrace my curls. I stopped straightening my hair, wore protective styles and slowly started cutting out the heat damage! I pretty much wore protective styles all of 2015. I finally had a healthy head of curls the beginning of 2016! This journey has been crazy, but worth it.

I’ve realized that you have to embrace the hair YOU have and do what works for YOUR hair. What works for the next natural may not work for you. I’ve learned to try different methods, products, and to be mindful of what works. In the process, I’ve fallen in love with my hair and what its capable of. I have a routine finally to maintain my curls and coils. I shampoo, condition, and deep condition weekly. Sometimes twice a week. I let my curls do their own thing and try to avoid manipulating as much as possible.

I’m so happy that I decided to return natural. It’s truly made me love myself, and accept who I am in a world where silky straight, long, flat hair is everywhere. Basically, If you don’t have straight inches and bundles you ain’t popping lol.  My natural hair made me embrace being different in a world where it’s easy to blend in with the crowd!
