Hey, guys! I’m Mai! I turn 23 January 31st. I’m from Connecticut. I big chopped September 2014. I’ve been natural for 3 years! My natural hair journey has been filled with setbacks, trial & error, good/bad hair days. My number 1 rule in maintaining my curls is: love your curls and they’ll love you back. That means – moisturizing when needed, styling when necessary, trims. Giving your hair the love that it needs.

You need to be consistent with your hair care and have a regimen that you stick to. Being natural can be difficult at times but I tell everyone that the journey is worth it. You break boundaries and bring yourself to new heights. There’s no limit to how dedicated you can be to yourself and your hair. This journey will show that. I decided to go natural because I needed a major change in my life. After I graduated high school in 2012, I didn’t know what to do with my hair. I figured changing my hairstyle would change my life altogether. It took me a year or so to come to a final decision about what I wanted my next style to be. Once I decided to big chop, I knew there was no turning back.

From there I would be a totally different person – or at least I would look different. In many ways, cutting my hair has changed my life for the better. I’m a much happier person in the skin I’m in today. I’m more confident in myself and my looks. Whether you decide to transition or big chop, I promise you this journey will be nothing but greatness. If you feel that this path will be too hard for you and you can’t come to a decision, think it over some more or ask for feedback from friends and family.

I would never push anyone to do something they didn’t have the heart to do themselves but I would like to tell you this: have faith in yourself and the decisions you make. For those decisions shape your future and the person you are today and who you’ll grow to be. Always listen to your gut. You know yourself better than anyone else. I love my hair and I love being part of the natural hair community. I would love for you to be part of it too! XO!
