My natural hair story. I went natural because there was no other way for me to go... My natural hair journey really began in the summer of 2015 when I decided to go three months with no heat. Even though I was already off the creamy crack for close to ten years; it didn't matter; I was addicted to heat (Wash-blow dry-straighten) so the damage was already done. Hii lovelies! My name is Talaya, and once I went natural, I NEVER went back! Lol. I've been natural for about a year and a half now. I've cut my hair into a pixie style several times now, but it wasn't until my last big chop that I became 100% natural and stopped getting relaxers. I absolutely love all natural hair. Hey! Sounds like something I'd love to support! I guess my #1 rule would be....MOISTURE! When my hair doesn't have the correct amount & type of moisture, it is frizzy, undefined and just a HOTT MESS! Hey guys , As a licensed hairstylist, natural hair enthusiast, and a proud curly girl since 2006 with more big chops than I can count, the key to healthy hair in my opinion is "leave-in conditioners". I don't care what kind you use as long as you're using something and it works for YOUR HAIR TYPE. To me they are the foundation that sets all hair styles, enables easier combing to reduce breakage and smooths frizz. It will take some trial and error to find your holy grail, but it is so worth it in the long run for hair health. I also highly recommend liquid spray style heat protectants because they don't cause buildup or add weight. Product ratio's and application order are also important. Know the desired end result so you can add or subtract products from your routine, see how they react to your hair alone and layered with other products. To be honest I've been natural my whole life my mom didn't use chemicals in my hair she just would straighten it from time to time. As a kid I always wore my hair in braids or brushed out. What inspires me most to keep up with my curls is some of the older heads I've viewed on YouTube or just social media in general.. I'm all about loving and knowing me. Moisture is key when it comes to maintaining my curls. That usually means deep conditioning at least twice a month. Sometimes I'll use store bought, but I love making my own using avocado, eggs, honey, and banana. Occasional water only rinsing in between styles and sealing with coconut oil has also helped keep my hair hydrated. I had super heat/chemically damaged hair and knew the only way to regrow it was to stop flat ironing and focus on the overall health of my hair. It was not easy, it took a lot of trial and error and hours of watching youtube tutorials to finally get a hang of it. I unknowingly transitioned for about a year slowly cutting off the damage. Deep condition! I haven't had a trim in a year and I definitely believe it's because I deep condition regularly. I was curious to see what my curls looked like. I eventually realized how damaged and unhealthy my hair was so I made a choice to love what God gave me and make sure I paid attention to it. I've technically been natural all my life but I ALWAYS straightened my hair so I never knew that my curls even existed. I had serious heat damage. On top of my heat damage, I tried to go blonde and my hair became BONE STRAIGHT and Oh so dry! It was awful. After a year of trying to grow that out I became frustrated and just chopped it all off. Heyy! Im Ally Dominique, my main rule I that I use for maintaining my curls are DEEP CONDITIONING! For a while I never saw the importance of deep conditioning until I saw that my growth process started retrogressing. Also, I wasn't paying attention to how often I would moisturize, which also played a large role. What made me go "natural", was that one of best friends had actually convinced me to try it.
