CURLYFEATURE – MEET Brittany

Hiiiii Beauties & CURLfriends! My name is Brittany, and some may know me as “BeautywithBJ” on Youtube and Instagram. Let me first start by confessing: while many may have decided to go natural, I was sort of forced to. Forced as in, I didn’t have much of a choice once I experienced a cute protective style gone WRONG and the results were irreversible. [In short: I had Senegalese twists installed. When the stylist installed them she used beeswax AND Spritz in my hair, unbeknownst to me. It was not until I kept them in for about 1.5 months and tried to take them out that I realized my hair had begun to lock and knot in the majority of places around my head].  My only option was to cut it off and start over. CURLYFEATURE – MEET Bri

Hi I'm Bri, I first started going natural in 2011.I was over spending money on perms and visits to the hair salon. I cut my permed hair into a short style and transitioned out of the short style by using protective styling. As my hair got longer I began using heating tools which damaged my hair. I did my second big chop(my current style) myself at the end of 2015 to get rid of the damage. I love my short natural cut but I plan to start growing it out this year. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Jasmine

Hey Curly Ladies! My name is Jasmine, and this is my second time going natural. The first time I transitioned for two years. I started in 2012 as what I would call a "straight natural," meaning it wasn't relaxed, but I kept it straightened. I experienced lots of heat damage, and I was unhappy with my ends being straight. After two years, I gave up. I relaxed my hair and wore a short cut. I guess I got sucked in from all the cute short styles I would see on Pinterest. This style was short lived, and after 5 months I decided to do the "Big Chop." This was August 2014, not to mention I was 8 months pregnant.  Honestly, what motivated me was wanting to see and experience my true curl pattern. In my opinion, returning natural by doing the "Big Chop," was the BEST decision I've ever made for my hair. It was a chance to start over. This...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Juliette

Hey Curly Sisters! My name is Juliette and I would love to tell you all about my journey. Since I was about 6 years old, My hair was relaxed. That's 21 years of not knowing my natural texture!!! I always wanted to be natural, but was too scared to actually take the plunge. I let everyone's interpretation of what "beauty" was influence me and I was tired of it. So summer of 2015 I did the big chop and it was the best decision I have ever made. I've never felt so free and so beautiful. (more…)...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Dez

Hey ! My name is Dez and the number one rule for me when maintaining my curls has always been using little to no heat on my hair mainly meaning straightening that has always been a huge thing for me that I definitely wanted to stop that habit once I did that I could see the transformation with my curls. What fueled my passion to become natural was hanging out with my friend one night she was natural and I love her hair that's where my idea came. Also my boyfriend wanted me to try it As well so I decided hey why not let's see how long this lasts. Its has been 4 years since my transition no big chop just patience and trimming off any straight ends along the way one thing that I will end with is try not to compare your hair journey with any one else. @Miss.glenn_...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Briana

Hey Curlfriends! My name is Bree, and I've been without a relaxer for eight years, but I decided to finally start my natural journey heat-free last year. I've never rocked a short look, so at first I decided to transition. After being frustrated with a line of demarcation between my new growth and heat damage, I decided to big chop in February 2016. Best. Decision. EVER.   I've always had long, relaxed hair since the age of 6. I never knew I had curls! I'm so excited to see so much growth in such short time. When I first cut my hair off, I wore braids, Marley twists, wigs, and lace frontals. I've tried all kinds of styles, because I wasn't ready to wear my TWA. I just got married in September, and the struggle for a wedding hairstyle was real... However, in this day and age, you can have any style you want without even revealing your real tresses. I'm a big product junkie! My...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Crystal

Hey everyone! My name is Crystal Shaw and I transitioned to natural 2x. In fact the first time I began transitioning I didn't know that there was a "natural hair movement" so to speak. I was in college and I was tired of relaxing my hair so I just decided to stop (I'm very spontaneous sometimes). During this time I went on YouTube and came across videos from all of the gurus and was like "Whoa I want my hair to do that!" My mom told me that it wouldn't, and since then  I've spent my time proving her wrong lol. During my first transition I ended up getting one of those "magical keratin  treatments" that is supposed to let you wear your hair straight AND curly *insert sarcasm and side eye here* . To make a long story short, it basically texturized my hair. After realizing what was happening I started to transition ALL the way over again and now I...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Ikeoluwa

Hi lovely curlistas! My name is Ikeoluwa A. (EK for short) I am a Material Science Engineering masters student at University of California, Irvine. Also I am Nigerian with a 4c hair type. I grew up in Nigeria believing that hair perming was the best way to manage my kind of hair texture. At about 20 years old, after having countless of perm mishaps, and finally getting my hair healthier by reducing the amount of times I perm my hair yearly, I decided to go natural. I decided to transition in the year 2011, and I failed woefully. I couldn't maintain two different textures. I permed my hair again after after 8 months of transitioning. In 2012, I decided to do the big chop. Since then, I have been loving and learning my hair everyday. One of the reasons I decided to be more open about my hair and encourage others is because I want people to understand that 4C hair...

CURLYFEATURE – MEET Rachella

Hi everyone! My name is Rachella but I am also known as "fro mama" as I am mother to a beautiful daughter and have a baby boy due in February. I first went natural in April 2014 after damaging my hair through heat and colouring to the point where my hair actually snapped off just above my shoulders. It was then that I decided that I needed to show my hair love and care to make it healthy again. I found myself constantly depressed that my hair didn't seem to be growing although I was taking such good care of it. I made the decision to embrace what I have and to stop comparing myself to others, it was only once I started to love my short hair and not focus on growth that I started to notice a huge change in my hair. My curl pattern had gone from waves to tight curls and my short shoulder length hair was now...
