Hi! My name is Chantell and I’m 24 years old. I have a very intense passion for seeing the beauty in everything and all people! Being a curly girl and going natural was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life; it gave me the confidence to feel beautiful and radiant owning my own roots. I’ve been natural for the past 6 years, starting at age 18. Its been a long but very rewarding journey.
What fueled my decision to go natural was the very fact that I grew up self-conscious about how different of texture my hair was compared to girls of other races. I used to feel like an outcast, especially after being teased for how “nappy” or thick my hair was. Until eventually one day, I had a very long talk with myself and told myself that I was beautiful too. I was tired of feeling sorry for myself and decided to be proud instead! And my love of being natural grew greater every single year. I learned many tips and tricks with maintaining the health and vitality of my curls along the way. One of my top rules has to do with washing; I’ve found that using a cotton t-shirt as opposed to a towel to dry my hair significantly decreases frizziness and also helps to maintain some of my natural moisture. Towels seemed to dry out my hair after washing so I began to use t-shirts instead. As far as keeping it healthy, I use Cantu Shea Butter and Coconut Curling Cream daily and do weekly conditioning masks with egg, mayonnaise, olive oil and coconut oil. Sounds gross I know! But it’s been very beneficial to my hair and I hope these tips help another curly girl out there!
